Ooo! And I'm so excited!

Well, for some, "Burning Man Season" doesn't start until August, but they don't plan and prepare like Horny Camp does. The instant it hits Summertime, I'm hitting the fabric stores, getting the sewing machine out, shopping for raver toys, and dreaming of being back out on the Playa. We have conference calls, make plans, have our annual debate about the communal shower, start collecting art supplies for our workshops, and our camp crystalizes into a team and a family unit.

Some folks live 51 weeks out of the year just for that one week on the Playa. What if you flipped that perspective? What if that one week on the Playa is for the 51 other weeks that you live? I believe that going to Burning Man is virtually pointless unless you bring a little bit of Burning Man back with you to the default world. Sure, get excited about that one week on the desert. Put in as much preparation towards your experience as you feel is appropriate. But don't forget to live your life now. Black Rock City is a pretty amazing place, but you know what? So is the default world.

Being camp captain never seemed like an appealing job to me. It always seemed to be a lot of work and a lot of challenge dealing with diverse personalities, with often little thanks. But this year’s Burning Man Theme “Rites of Passage” inspired me to volunteer to be camp captain this year. This is my rite of passage. I am doing this because it is challenging. I am doing this as a gift to a truly kick-ass little camp. This is my gesture of love for my camp mates.
